Notes de leçon
Daily routine and reflexive verbs
- Je me réveille means I wake up, je me lève I get up, je me lave I wash, je m’habille I get dressed and je me couche I go to bed. Je m’endors instead means I fall asleep. These are distinct routine actions.
- Match subject and pronoun: je me, tu te, il/elle se, nous nous, vous vous, ils/elles se. Elide me/te/se before vowels or silent h as appropriate. Je me brosse les dents uses a subject-matching pronoun and the definite article for the body part.
Match the routine expression
Time and sequence
- D’abord means first, ensuite/puis then and enfin finally in a sequence. Après is after; its full construction depends on what follows. Sequencing words give order, while a clock expression gives a time.
- À sept heures means at seven, à huit heures et demie at 8:30 and à midi at noon. Original fictional routine: Je me réveille à sept heures, je me lève à sept heures dix, puis je prends le petit-déjeuner à sept heures et demie.
Order and time
Meals
- This lesson’s specified common metropolitan-France usage is petit-déjeuner for breakfast, déjeuner lunch and dîner the evening meal. Goûter is an afternoon snack. These are reference vocabulary choices, not identical schedules for every speaker.
- In Québec, déjeuner commonly means breakfast, dîner lunch and souper the evening meal. Other regional patterns exist. Je prends le petit-déjeuner uses prendre for having breakfast; je mange and je bois distinguish eating and drinking.
Meal reference varies by region
Food and drink
- Le pain is bread, le fromage cheese, le poulet chicken, le poisson fish, les légumes vegetables and les fruits fruit. Du lait is some milk, de l’eau some water and un jus d’orange a serving of orange juice.
- Learn articles and accents with the noun. Poisson and poison differ; légumes does not mean only English legumes. A food’s name alone does not list all ingredients or guarantee suitability for an individual diet.
Food quantity examples
Partitive articles
- For ordinary nonspecified quantities, use du with masculine singular consonant-initial nouns, de la with feminine singular consonant-initial nouns and de l’ before a vowel or silent h with either gender. Des légumes is a plural indefinite form often taught alongside partitives.
- Ordinary total negation before a direct object usually gives de/d’: Je ne mange pas de viande. Definite la stays in Je n’aime pas la viande; être and explicit contrast can preserve a partitive, as in Ce n’est pas du lait. The rule is not universal across every negative sentence.
Compare article constructions
Healthy eating
- Sain/saine, gras/grasse, sucré/sucrée, salé/salée and équilibré/équilibrée are descriptive adjective forms. Je préfère les légumes parce que j’aime leur goût gives a personal preference with a reason.
- Végétarien/végétarienne is vegetarian and differs from végétalien or végan. Describe the supplied speaker or an imagined diet; the lesson teaches language rather than a fixed meal plan or portion requirement.
Descriptive food words
At the restaurant
- Je voudrais is a conventional polite request, I would like. L’addition, s’il vous plaît asks for the bill. La carte lists dishes and un menu can be a set meal; entrée, plat principal and dessert name courses in the reference restaurant usage.
- Original fictional menu: formule à 20 € — une soupe et un plat de légumes; dessert à 5 € en supplément; eau incluse. Menu plus dessert costs €25. The text states inclusion and supplement, not every ingredient or a real restaurant offer.
Original fictional restaurant exchange
Opinions
- J’aime, j’adore, je préfère and je déteste express preferences; à mon avis introduces a viewpoint and parce que its reason. Keep the article after aimer: J’aime le pain differs from Je mange du pain.
- Original model: À mon avis, ce repas est bon parce que la soupe est savoureuse. Many other opinions are possible. An imagined morning routine or meal is valid and need not disclose personal habits.

- Fictional routine: réveil 7 h; lever 7 h 10; petit-déjeuner 7 h 30. The first entry is waking and the second getting out of bed; they are not interchangeable translations.
- Je me réveille à sept heures. Ensuite, je me lève à sept heures dix. Enfin, je prends le petit-déjeuner à sept heures et demie. Use subject-matching pronouns and the stated times rather than imposing this schedule on every learner.
