Notes de leçon
Read the whole task before choosing a structure
- Identify/state asks for requested information; describe sets out characteristics; explain develops purposes or reasons. Read these with the topic, source instruction, number of points, context and marks rather than answer from one word alone.
- Analyse examines relationships; compare makes the requested linked comparison; evaluate/assess or how far requires a supported judgement. Exact wording and subject guidance matter, so this broad lesson is not a substitute for the actual board’s instructions.
Connect command and complete task
Develop a reason instead of naming a connective
- Original practice point: an online-only survey may miss pupils without reliable access. Development: those pupils may respond less often, so findings may under-represent their access barriers. The mechanism connects the method to a relevant consequence.
- Because, however and therefore can make relationships clear, but the word alone supplies no evidence or explanation. A short identify-and-explain task needs the requested point and development, not automatically a full essay.
Develop an original methods explanation
Use PEEL as a flexible aid
- Point, Evidence, Explain, Link is the optional aid used here: make a relevant claim, support it, explain why it matters and connect it to the question. Other clear structures can also work; PEEL is not a required marking formula.
- In sociology, apply the relevant concept or theory rather than merely name it; in citizenship, use relevant institutions, rights, processes or action evidence as required. Do not force an unrelated theory, counter-argument or essay introduction into every response.
Use the optional PEEL aid meaningfully
Apply evidence from an original fictional source
- Original source: 20 of 50 pupils attended before a youth project and 30 of 50 after. These are 40% and 60%, a rise of 20 percentage points. This supports higher measured attendance in the stated observations, not a national trend.
- No comparison group or information about other changes is supplied. The source does not establish that the project caused the rise, that the same pupils were observed or that everyone’s trust improved; distinguish what is given from what is inferred.
Apply original fictional attendance evidence
Evaluate the source for the claim being made
- Check author/organisation, purpose, date, evidence, method, population and corroboration as relevant to the claim. A one-sided source may still contain useful facts or show a viewpoint; do not dismiss it solely because it has an interest.
- Source credibility for a factual claim differs from methodological reliability as consistency. Explain a specific limitation, such as self-selected feedback missing non-users, and how it affects the claim rather than write a generic statement that the source is biased.
Evaluate usefulness for a particular claim
Reach a reasoned degree of agreement
- For a disputed claim, examine relevant reasons, evidence and alternatives, then weigh their importance using a clear criterion. Balance means fair assessment, not necessarily equal word counts for unequal evidence or a fixed number of paragraphs.
- Original conclusion for the youth example: measured attendance rose, but the cause and wider impact remain uncertain. This answers how far the evidence supports the claim and is stronger than either it definitely worked or the source tells us nothing.
Form a limited original judgement
Plan timing from the actual paper
- Use the published duration, total marks, section rules and any access arrangements to plan. Original practice paper: 90 minutes for 60 marks with 6 minutes reserved for checking leaves 84 working minutes, averaging 1.4 minutes per mark.
- A six-mark allocation would average 8.4 working minutes under this practice plan, not a universal requirement. Allow for source reading and brief planning within the paper; move on sensibly and return if possible rather than let one answer consume the whole time.
Calculate an original practice timing plan
Use terms, examples and action evidence accurately
- Choose accurate concepts and explain their connection to the task. A hypothetical example can illustrate a mechanism but must not be presented as a real study or national statistic; do not invent quotations, percentages or theorists’ findings.
- If a task asks about the learner’s own citizenship action, use genuine research, actions and reflection, following the board’s requirements. The fictional youth project here is practice material, not evidence that the pupil conducted it.
Keep evidence types honest and relevant
Check the response against the task
- Check the requested number of points, command, application, units and calculation, then whether each paragraph advances the answer. Use a supported conclusion where evaluation is required and avoid causal or universal claims beyond the evidence.
- Read actual paper selection rules and mark schemes during preparation; there is no universal requirement for an essay introduction, named theory, fixed paragraph count or specific connective in every social-studies question. Relevant reasoning matters more than length alone.
