The Four Operations
- Addition (+) combines numbers to find a total or sum.
- Subtraction (−) finds the difference between numbers.
- Multiplication (×) is repeated addition; the result is the product.
- Division (÷) splits a number into equal parts; the result is the quotient.
- Each operation has an inverse: addition and subtraction are inverses, as are multiplication and division.
Order of Operations: BIDMAS/BODMAS
- The conventional order is: Brackets, Indices (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication (equal priority), Addition and Subtraction (equal priority).
- Perform operations from left to right when they have the same priority.
- Brackets (parentheses) are always evaluated first, working from the innermost to the outermost.
- Indices include powers (e.g., 32) and roots (e.g., √9).
- Multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction.
- Example: 1 + 2 × 3 = 1 + 6 = 7, not (1 + 2) × 3 = 9.
Using Brackets to Override Order
- Brackets force a different order: (2 + 3) × 4 = 5 × 4 = 20.
- Nested brackets: evaluate the innermost first, e.g., [2 × (3 + 4)] − 5 = [2 × 7] − 5 = 14 − 5 = 9.
- Different types of brackets ( ), [ ], { } can be used to make grouping clearer.
Indices and Roots
- An index (power) tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself: 34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81.
- Indices have higher priority than multiplication and division.
- Example: 1 − 2 × 34 = 1 − 2 × 81 = 1 − 162 = −161.
- A root is the inverse of a power: √(1+3) + 5 = √4 + 5 = 2 + 5 = 7.
- The radical symbol √ extends over its radicand (the expression under the root) without needing brackets.
Mental Strategies
- Use known facts and place value to calculate mentally, e.g., 25 × 4 = 100.
- Break numbers into parts: 47 + 38 = 47 + 30 + 8 = 85.
- Use inverse operations to check: if 7 × 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
- Estimate first to check the reasonableness of an answer.
Written Methods for Addition and Subtraction
- Column addition: align numbers by place value, add each column from right to left, carrying when a column sum is 10 or more.
- Column subtraction: align numbers, subtract each column from right to left, borrowing when needed.
- For decimals, align the decimal points before adding or subtracting.
Written Methods for Multiplication
- Long multiplication: multiply by each digit of the second number, then add the partial products.
- Example: 23 × 14 = (23 × 10) + (23 × 4) = 230 + 92 = 322.
- For decimals, multiply as if whole numbers, then place the decimal point so the total number of decimal places matches the question.
Written Methods for Division
- Short division: divide each digit from left to right, carrying remainders.
- Long division: use for larger divisors; the steps are divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.
- Example: 322 ÷ 14 = 23 because 14 × 23 = 322.
- For decimals, adjust the division to work with whole numbers where possible.
Inverse Operations and Checking
- Use inverse operations to check answers: addition checks subtraction, multiplication checks division.
- For example, if 56 ÷ 8 = 7, then 7 × 8 = 56 confirms the answer.
- Estimating before calculating helps spot errors.
