The written paper
- Check the qualification, specification, component, duration, total marks, permitted equipment and any choice instructions for your own paper. GCSE D&T formats differ; do not apply one board’s section structure or timing to every paper.
- For example, the AQA 8552 specification lists a 120-minute, 100-mark written paper with core technical, specialist technical, and designing/making sections. Pearson Edexcel 1DT0’s cited specification gives a 105-minute, 100-mark written component. These labelled examples demonstrate variation; the actual paper and current board instructions take precedence.
- Questions may test technical knowledge, application, design reasoning, mathematics, science or communication in combination. A section label does not imply that all mathematics appears only in one separate section. This lesson is general written-paper technique, not a substitute for board-specific NEA instructions or annual assessment materials.
Command words
- State/name/identify require concise relevant information or recognition as requested; describe sets out characteristics; explain gives purpose or reasons. Compare connects the named options using common criteria. Do not write two isolated descriptions when a direct comparison is needed.
- Justify supports a case with evidence. Evaluate judges from available evidence, weighing important strengths and limitations against requirements. Discuss develops key ideas or competing considerations according to the task. These commands overlap in reasoning but are not identical formulas.
- Calculate asks for a value: show enough method to trace substitution and unit conversion, follow rounding instructions and state relevant units. Sketch/draw/annotate requirements vary; follow what is requested instead of assuming every drawing needs identical labels or dimensions.
Commands ask for different responses
Answering well
- Use a traceable chain: relevant property or feature → effect → why that meets the stated need. For a specified clear acrylic display panel, clarity can support viewing and suitable stiffness can retain shape, while brittleness, scratching, thickness and use conditions may limit suitability. Opaque acrylic grades exist, so the material name alone is insufficient.
- Technical vocabulary must be accurate: malleability, toughness, stiffness and strength are different ideas. A suitable aluminium alloy can combine low density and required mechanical properties; do not generalise that pure aluminium is always the correct aircraft material. Evidence should concern the stated grade, process, user and environment.
- The original phone-stand concept contrasts a plain drawing with annotations identifying acrylic sheet, a retaining lip and a broad base. The leaders point to the features and connect them to function. This is an illustrative idea, not tested stability, measured dimensions or manufacturing instructions; include dimensions or movement only when needed for the question.
- For a material evaluation, select important criteria, develop relevant benefits and limitations, and support a judgement. Standard MDF can suit some indoor panel applications, but moisture, mass, fixing design and edge finishing affect suitability for a flat-pack desk. Outdoor timber performance depends on species, grade, design and maintenance. An acronym or balanced list alone does not establish quality.
- Worked invented costing: 0.6 m² × £24 per m² = £14.40, excluding stated additional costs. Separate unit conversion: 0.24 m × 1,000 mm/m = 240 mm. Show enough working to check method and units; method credit depends on the actual mark scheme rather than a universal promise.
Trace an invented material cost
Time management
- Create a starting time budget from the actual duration, usable working time, total marks and expected task demands. Reserve a realistic checking allowance and adapt during the paper. One mark per minute is not a universal rule: different board papers already have different overall time-to-mark ratios.
- For an invented 120-minute, 100-mark paper with ten minutes checking, working time is 110 minutes, or 1.1 minutes per mark. A four-mark task has a proportional starting budget of 4.4 minutes, not an exact compulsory stopwatch limit. Reading, planning and calculations may need different allocations.
- If stuck, record any relevant progress, flag the question and move on temporarily when useful. Return if time permits and follow any optional-question rules. Check missed parts, units, requested features and whether conclusions answer the actual task rather than adding irrelevant detail.
Build a flexible time budget
Revision
- Practise retrieving property–use links and then check for errors. Apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, compare alternatives against requirements and revisit misconceptions later. Combining recall, application, feedback and timed practice is more informative than rereading a list alone.
- Use suitable past questions, mark schemes and examiner feedback for your qualification. Look for why credit is awarded and practise producing your own reasoning, rather than memorising one wording as a guaranteed universal answer. Include calculations, conversions and communication through relevant sketches as well as factual recall.
