Society and culture

  • Society, fashion, available technology and cultural contexts can influence needs, preferences and design opportunities. Ask intended users about their routines and the meanings of symbols; avoid treating a national or cultural label as one shared taste.
  • Arts and Crafts emphasised craftsmanship and the connection between makers and well-made objects. William Morris was a major influence, but the movement involved many people and organisations. Art Nouveau often explored flowing organic forms; Art Deco includes geometric decoration and varied luxurious and modern approaches.
  • Bauhaus is associated with relationships between art, craft, technology and functional form, but it was diverse rather than a single visual formula. Memphis is associated with postmodern colour, pattern and playful or unconventional combinations. Minimalism deliberately reduces elements; simplicity does not guarantee usability.
  • The original cabinet concepts illustrate craft emphasis, geometric glamour and playful contrast. They are not historical artefacts, attributed designer works or complete reproductions of any movement. Use their visible material, symmetry, colour and pattern to explain a comparison, then study authenticated examples separately when required.

Influential designers

  • Analyse a specific contribution rather than memorising a name as the sole inventor of a broad product category. James Dyson’s company history describes developing cyclonic domestic vacuum technology and launching the DC01. Explain the dust-separation approach without claiming universally superior suction or that all bagless technology began with one individual.
  • Morris’s craft principles offer another case study in relationships between making, production and everyday objects. Designers such as Jony Ive, Philippe Starck and Charles Rennie Mackintosh can also be studied through named, authenticated works and documented roles. Product development often involves teams; credit and influence should follow evidence.

Intellectual property

  • Different IP rights concern different subject matter: a patent can protect a qualifying invention, a registered design eligible product appearance, a trade mark an identifier, and copyright qualifying original expression. The same product can involve several rights, such as a technical mechanism, shape, name and drawing.
  • A right’s eligibility, claims or scope, territory and relevant exceptions matter. Protection does not automatically prevent copying in practice or guarantee profit; applications, maintenance, licensing or enforcement may involve costs. UK copyright generally arises without registration, but that does not give ownership of every idea.
  • IP can encourage investment or licensing and can also constrain use of protected subject matter by others. Discuss the actual right and context rather than assuming all IP has one effect on innovation. This is a school-level conceptual comparison, not advice on registering or enforcing rights.

Standards and safety

  • Regulations set relevant legal requirements, while standards provide defined technical requirements or guidance. A standard is not automatically a law or a guarantee covering every hazard. Identify the appropriate requirements for a particular product and context.
  • BSI Kitemark is independent certification within a defined scheme scope. CE and UKCA indicate conformity within applicable product and market regimes and must not be treated as universal quality awards or government guarantees. No mark removes the need for appropriate design, assessment and continued quality control.
  • A certification mark or logo may itself be protected by IP. Distinguish the certification activity from rights in its identifying mark, rather than using Kitemark as a blanket example of something with no IP status.

Moral issues

  • Investigate working conditions, harmful or exploitative child labour, safety and truthful claims using credible evidence about the actual supply chain. A low price does not by itself establish misconduct, and a confident brand claim does not prove ethical practice.
  • Ask who receives the benefit and who bears the costs, including workers, users, communities and future users. Changes can create trade-offs between cost, access, durability, repair and waste. A justified ethical judgement should name the evidence, affected people and remaining uncertainty.

Social impact

  • Products can improve access to mobility, communication, learning or services. They can also create barriers through cost, inaccessible controls or reliance on particular infrastructure. Investigate affected people instead of assuming a benefit is shared equally.
  • A phone can support communication while raising questions about privacy, distraction, repairability and electronic waste. Effects depend on design and use. Evaluate specific features and evidence rather than claiming every user experiences an inevitable medical or social outcome.
