शिक्षकों के लिए: Writing to inform, explain and advise (English Language, Writing)
To inform is to give facts clearly; to explain is to say how or why something happens; to advise is to recommend what someone should do.
Typical forms: leaflets, guides, articles, reports, emails and letters, and web pages. The audience might be students, parents or the public.
Different purposes, one guide
Language and tone
Be clear, organised and accurate. Choose tone and register for the particular purpose and readers; young readers may need a serious tone for a serious subject.
Advice may use imperatives, modal verbs and direct address. Explanation can connect causes and consequences: “because” introduces a reason; “so” and “as a result” often introduce a result.
Avoid slang, filler and exaggeration unless the audience suits it.
Cause, result and purpose
Structure and presentation
Use a clear title, headings and subheadings, bullet points and short paragraphs where the form allows.
Begin with a purpose statement ("This guide will help you..."), group information logically, and end with a summary or next step.
Use accurate, relevant facts and examples. Verify statistics and avoid presenting hypothetical figures as research findings. An anecdote may help if it illustrates rather than replaces the explanation.
Help the reader navigate
Checking
Does every paragraph have one clear point? Is the order logical? Have you used the correct form and register? Have you proofread for accuracy?
