Origins
- Jazz emerged around the turn of the twentieth century, with African American communities central and New Orleans an important setting for interaction. Blues, ragtime, marches, church and dance music contributed alongside broader exchanges involving African, Caribbean and European-derived practices. The story is not a single inventor, date or one-way chain from blues.
- Louis Armstrong was an influential trumpeter and singer; Duke Ellington a composer, pianist and bandleader; Ella Fitzgerald a major singer and scat improviser; Charlie Parker an influential bebop alto saxophonist; Miles Davis contributed to several later developments. These musicians had different careers and roles; they were not all founders of early New Orleans jazz.
Blues
- Twelve-bar blues is one common formal model, not the length of every blues song. A basic pattern can use I in bars 1–4, IV in 5–6, I in 7–8, V in 9, IV in 10 and I in 11–12. Other patterns, quick changes, turnarounds and substitutions exist. In C, these roots are C, F and G; dominant-seventh qualities are common in this model.
- A common AAB text repeats or varies a first line, then responds with a third line. Call and response can occur between voice and instrument or between musical groups. Blues texts address many subjects, including relationships, humour and everyday life as well as hardship.
- Blue-note performance uses expressive pitch inflection, often around lowered or flexible thirds, fifths and sevenths relative to a major framework. The common C minor blues-scale collection C, E♭, F, G♭, G, B♭ offers one fixed-pitch model, but does not capture every pitch bend or every blues melody.

Jazz styles
- Traditional New Orleans-style jazz and later revivals, sometimes labelled Dixieland, often feature a front line improvising together. The label has a history of changing usage and does not cover every jazz performance from that city.
- Swing as a historical style is associated especially with big bands and dance audiences in the 1930s–40s. Arranged ensemble passages and improvised solos can coexist. Swing feel is also a rhythmic performance concept used beyond the period.
- Bebop developed particularly in the 1940s through musicians including Parker, Gillespie, Monk and others. Small groups and intricate melodic, harmonic and rhythmic improvisation are typical; fast tempos are common rather than compulsory. Cool jazz, modal approaches, free jazz and fusion show further diversity.

Features
- Improvisation develops ideas during performance, often using shared forms, harmony and practised vocabulary. A head is the main tune; a chorus is one pass through the form, not necessarily a pop-song refrain. Trading fours alternates four-bar improvised passages while musicians keep their place in the form.
- Walking bass commonly supports pulse and harmony with crotchet movement in 4/4, combining chord tones, steps, leaps and chromatic approaches. Comping refers to responsive accompaniment, often rhythmic chords on piano or guitar, with broader use for other accompaniment roles.
- Swing quavers usually have an unequal long-short feel, but exact timing varies with tempo, articulation and performer. An approximate triplet model is useful for practice, not an invariant numerical law. Syncopation displaces expected metrical emphasis, including accents or sustained sounds across stronger beats.
- Seventh chords combine a triad and a seventh above its root in a basic model. For example, C7 contains C, E, G, B♭, while Cmaj7 contains B natural instead of B♭. Chord type depends on interval content, not whether a listener calls the colour jazzy.

Instruments
- Jazz ensembles vary. An acoustic rhythm section may include double bass, piano or guitar and drums; trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, trombone or voice may take melodic roles. These roles can move between players, and electric or other instruments are also used.
- No instrument or single musical feature proves a style by itself. For a listening task, connect a precise observation to the actual passage and its context. The written theory tables here do not replace an audio excerpt or certify recognition by ear.
Read the written examples with their limits
- The twelve-bar table gives one conventional pattern, not a rule for all blues. One column corresponds to one bar, and the return to the beginning starts another chorus. A head–solo–head flow is one common form rather than a compulsory order.
- The invented bass example places C, E, G and G♭ on beats 1–4 over C7, then F on the next downbeat as F7 begins. C–E and E–G are leaps; G–G♭–F supplies chromatic approach. It demonstrates a possible line and is not transcribed from a recording.
