What Section B asks

  • Section B is an essay on the set text as a whole, or on a significant element or character within it — 25 marks.
  • Specimen questions:×"How does Brecht strikingly portray corruption in the play?"×;×"In what ways does Dangarembga powerfully convey the conflict between generations in the novel?"×;×"Explore how Ibsen memorably portrays the relationship between Hedda and Tesman."×
  • Poetry:×"How do the poets create powerful effects in [named poem] and in one other poem from this selection?"×— so you write about two poems.
  • Stories:×"How does the writer memorably depict the life of the narrator in either [story A] or [story B]?"×— you choose one story.
  • Paper 3 is closed book: all reference comes from memory.

Rules to notice

  • An instruction such as "Do not refer to the extract in Question 4" means you must not reuse the Section A passage for that text.
  • Answer the question set on your text; do not bring in a prepared essay on a different focus.
  • If the question names an element (a theme, a relationship, a setting), every paragraph must be about that element.
  • Spend about 45 minutes, including 5–8 minutes planning.

Planning an argument

  • Turn the question into a thesis: a one-sentence answer you will prove.
  • Choose 4–5 key moments from across the text — beginning, turning points, climax, ending — that best show the focus.
  • For each moment, recall short quotations and a method you can analyse.
  • Organise by idea (each paragraph a different aspect) or by development (how the focus changes through the text).
  • Plan an ending that judges the writer's overall achievement.

Learning quotations for a closed-book paper

  • Learn short, flexible quotations (2–6 words) that serve several themes or characters.
  • Organise them by character, theme and key moment.
  • Where exact words escape you, close paraphrase of precise detail still earns AO1 credit — accuracy matters more than length.
  • Key symbols, images and stage moments count as reference too (e.g.×the sound of the axe×,×the snapped string×).

Writing the essay

  • Opening: a direct thesis that answers the question — no biography or plot summary.
  • Each paragraph: point → reference → method and effect → link to the question.
  • Show development: how the writer shapes the focus across the whole text (structure is a method).
  • Include context only where it explains the text — e.g. the sale of estates after the 1861 emancipation of the serfs in Chekhov's Russia.
  • Conclude with an evaluation:×how powerfully/memorably×has the writer done it?

Poetry and short-story essays

  • Poetry Section B: discuss the named poem and one other from the selection; a balanced answer treats both closely.
  • Choose a second poem that suits the question's focus (loss, childhood, love, nature…).
  • Stories Section B: choose one of the two named stories and write about it in detail.
  • Comparison is not required in the poetry essay, but linking the two poems can sharpen the answer.

What separates the levels

  • Level 6 (22–25): skilfully integrated well-selected reference; sustained critical understanding; detailed response to effects; perceptive, evaluative response.
  • Level 4 (13–17): supporting reference and overall understanding, with some response to language, structure and form.
  • Essays slip down the levels when they narrate, lose the question's focus, or use generalised reference ("at one point in the play…").
  • Precise recall and a clear argument are the fastest ways up.
