Africa's Size and Global Position

  • Africa is the second-largest continent, covering about 30.4 million km² including its islands.
  • It is separated from Europe by the Mediterranean Sea and from much of Asia by the Red Sea.
  • Africa joins Asia at the Isthmus of Suez, a 130 km-wide strip crossed by the Suez Canal.
  • The continent stretches about 8,000 km from Ras ben Sakka in Tunisia (37°21′N) to Cape Agulhas in South Africa (34°51′S).
  • From west to east it spans roughly 7,400 km, from Cap-Vert (17°31′W) to Ras Hafun in Somalia (51°27′E).

A Continent of 54 Countries

  • Africa contains 54 recognised countries and 63 political territories in total.
  • This makes it the continent with the largest number of countries in the world.
  • Its countries vary enormously in size, population, language, culture and wealth.
  • The Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, east of the Suez Canal, is usually treated as part of Africa for geopolitical purposes.

Physical Features: Mountains, Lakes and Rivers

  • Africa's highest mountain is Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Its largest lake is Lake Victoria.
  • The Nile is a major river flowing northwards through the Sahara to the Mediterranean.
  • The Great Rift Valley is a giant depression formed by the subsidence of whole segments of the Earth's crust.
  • The Albertine Rift contains the Great Lakes Tanganyika, Kivu, Edward and Albert.
  • Lake Tanganyika is over 640 km long and is the longest freshwater lake in the world.

Plateaus and Elevation

  • Africa's average elevation is about 600 m above sea level.
  • Moderately elevated tablelands are the continent's characteristic feature.
  • Higher tablelands generally lie to the east and south, with lower land towards the west and north.
  • The South African plateau is like an inverted saucer, bounded by steep high ground falling to the coast.
  • The Great Karoo is a dry, barren plateau region, and the Kalahari Desert is even more arid.

The Sahara and the Sahel

  • The Sahara is a vast desert that separates the Atlas Mountains from the rest of the continent.
  • The Sahel is the semi-arid transition zone between the Sahara and the wetter savanna to the south.
  • Desert and semi-desert conditions make water scarcity a major challenge in these regions.

Rainforests and Savanna

  • Rainforests are found in the wet equatorial regions, mainly around the Congo Basin.
  • Savanna grasslands cover large areas, especially between the rainforest and the deserts.
  • These biomes support very different vegetation, wildlife and farming systems.
  • Coastal plains are often fringed by mangrove swamps and never stretch far inland.

Challenging Stereotypes of Africa

  • Africa is often wrongly portrayed as a single place of poverty, conflict and wildlife.
  • In reality it is a continent of contrasts, with modern cities, growing economies and diverse cultures.
  • It includes deserts, rainforests, mountains, savannas and fertile plateaus.
  • Its 54 countries have different histories, governments and levels of development.
  • Avoiding stereotypes means recognising both challenges and opportunities across the continent.

Country Case Study: Kenya

  • Kenya lies in East Africa and is a useful case study of development and opportunity.
  • It has a varied landscape including savanna, highlands and the Great Rift Valley.
  • Its economy relies on agriculture, tourism and services.
  • Kenya faces challenges such as drought and rapid urban growth.
  • It also has opportunities in technology, conservation and trade.

Country Case Study: Nigeria

  • Nigeria is in West Africa and is the continent's most populous country.
  • It is a major producer of oil, which is central to its economy.
  • Nigeria has a rapidly growing population and large cities such as Lagos.
  • It faces challenges including inequality and reliance on oil.
  • Opportunities include diversifying the economy and a young workforce.
