What is a Story?
- A story is a series of events that can be true or made up.
- Stories can be told in prose, verse, or script.
- Stories are meant to amuse or inform the audience.
- Story structure is how we organize the events of a story.
- Good structure helps readers understand and enjoy the story.
The Shape of a Story
- A story usually has five parts: opening, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending.
- The opening introduces the characters and the setting.
- The build-up adds details and creates interest.
- The problem (or climax) is the most exciting part where the main conflict happens.
- The resolution solves the problem.
- The ending wraps up the story and shows how things end.
Setting and Narrator
- The setting is where and when the story happens.
- The narrator is the person telling the story.
- The narrator can be a character in the story or someone outside.
- Point of view means whose eyes we see the story through.
- A clear setting helps readers imagine the story world.
Developing Characters
- Characters are the people or animals in the story.
- Show what characters are like through their actions, dialogue, and description.
- Dialogue is the words characters say.
- Instead of saying 'she was brave', show her doing something brave.
- Good characters feel real and interesting.
Building Tension
- Tension is the excitement or suspense in a story.
- Use short sentences to make the story feel fast and exciting.
- Choose strong words to create mood.
- Vary sentence length to keep readers interested.
- Tension makes readers want to know what happens next.
Using Paragraphs
- Paragraphs help organize your story.
- Start a new paragraph when the time changes.
