Introduction to Thermal Energy Transfer
- Thermal energy is transferred from hotter objects to colder objects.
- There are three ways thermal energy can be transferred: conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction
- Conduction occurs primarily in solids.
- As particles in a solid are heated, they vibrate more and transfer vibrations through collisions.
- Materials that conduct heat well are called conductors (e.g., metals).
- Materials that do not conduct heat well are called insulators (e.g., plastics, gases).
- Gases are good insulators because their particles are far apart.
- Conduction is not possible through a vacuum because there are no particles.
Convection
- Convection happens in liquids and gases.
- Heated particles move faster, become less dense, and rise.
- Cooler particles are more dense and sink, creating a convection current.
- Example: In a pan on a stove, water at the bottom heats up, rises, cools at the top, and sinks.
Radiation
- All objects emit infrared radiation (thermal radiation).
- Infrared radiation is an electromagnetic wave and can travel through a vacuum.
- This is how thermal energy reaches Earth from the Sun.
- Matt black surfaces absorb the most infrared radiation.
- Shiny silver surfaces reflect infrared radiation.
Particle arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have closely packed vibrating particles (conduction), liquids and gases have particles that can move (convection).
