Why English Spelling Is Tricky
- English spelling is standardised, but many sounds can be spelled in multiple ways, and many letters have more than one pronunciation.
- This variety comes partly from loanwords borrowed from other languages and partly from historical accidents, such as early printing choices.
- Spelling often reflects the pronunciation of Middle English, not modern English, so sounds and letters no longer match neatly.
- Despite regional dialects, there are only slight variations in spelling, mainly British and American conventions.
How Letters Represent Sounds
- A single letter usually represents one phoneme in a given position, e.g. ⟨a⟩ and ⟨t⟩ in 'at'.
- Digraphs are two letters that make one sound, such as ⟨th⟩ in 'thrash' and ⟨sh⟩ in 'thrash'.
- A trigraph is three letters that make one sound, such as ⟨tch⟩ in 'hatch'.
- A single letter can represent multiple sounds: ⟨x⟩ often stands for the cluster /ks/, as in 'tax'.
- The same letter or sequence can be pronounced differently depending on its position, e.g. ⟨gh⟩ in 'tough', 'plough' and 'ghost'.
Silent Letters
- Silent letters are written but not pronounced in modern English.
- Examples include the ⟨l⟩ in 'talk', 'half' and 'calf'.
- The ⟨w⟩ is silent in 'two' and 'sword'.
- The ⟨gh⟩ is silent in words like 'though', 'daughter', 'night' and 'brought'.
- The silent ⟨e⟩ at the end of words is very common and affects the pronunciation of earlier vowels.
Spelling and Word Origin
- Some spellings signal a word's origin, especially words borrowed from Greek.
- ⟨y⟩ representing /ɪ/ often marks Greek origin, as in 'myth', while 'pith' is Germanic.
- ⟨ph⟩ pronounced /f/ usually marks Greek origin, e.g. 'telephone'.
- ⟨ch⟩ pronounced /k/ often marks Greek origin, e.g. 'character'.
- These patterns can also suggest a more formal register, though there are many exceptions.
Homophones and Commonly Confused Words
- Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
- Spelling helps distinguish homophones in writing, e.g. 'heir' and 'air', 'pain' and 'pane', 'break' and 'brake'.
- Some homophones remain unresolved by spelling: 'bay' has several different meanings.
- Commonly confused words include their/there/they're, affect/effect, practice/practise, and of/have.
- Learn the meaning and grammatical role of each word to choose the correct spelling.
Plural Spelling Rules
- Most nouns add -s to form the plural: 'cat' → 'cats'.
- Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z, -ch, -sh add -es: 'bus' → 'buses', 'box' → 'boxes', 'church' → 'churches'.
- Nouns ending in a consonant + y change y to i and add -es: 'city' → 'cities'.
- Nouns ending in vowel + y just add -s: 'boy' → 'boys'.
- Some nouns ending in -f or -fe change to -ves: 'leaf' → 'leaves', 'knife' → 'knives'.
- Some plurals are irregular: 'child' → 'children', 'mouse' → 'mice', 'foot' → 'feet'.
Adding Suffixes: Doubling and Dropping e
- Double the final consonant before a suffix beginning with a vowel if the word ends in a single consonant after a single vowel and is stressed on the last syllable: 'run' → 'running', 'begin' → 'beginning'.
- Do not double the consonant if the word ends in two consonants or the stress is not on the last syllable: 'jump' → 'jumped', 'visit' → 'visited'.
- Drop the final e before a suffix beginning with a vowel: 'hope' → 'hoping', 'make' → 'making'.
- Keep the final e before a suffix beginning with a consonant: 'hope' → 'hopeful', 'care' → 'careful'.
- Exceptions: keep the e after soft c or g before -able or -ous: 'notice' → 'noticeable', 'courage' → 'courageous'.
Adding Suffixes: y to i and i before e
- When a word ends in a consonant + y, change y to i before most suffixes: 'happy' → 'happiness', 'carry' → 'carried'.
- Keep the y before -ing: 'carry' → 'carrying'.
- Keep the y after a vowel: 'play' → 'played', 'enjoy' → 'enjoyment'.
- The i before e rule: use i before e except after c, when the sound is /iː/: 'believe', 'receive'.
- Exceptions to i before e: 'weird', 'seize', 'either', 'neither', 'protein'.
Strategies for Tricky Spellings
- Break words into syllables to spell them step by step: 'Wed-nes-day', 'in-ter-est-ing'.
- Use mnemonics to remember difficult patterns: 'big elephants can always understand small elephants' for 'because'.
- Look for word families and roots to link spellings: 'sign' → 'signal', 'medicine' → 'medical'.
- Say it as it looks for silent letters: 'Wed-nes-day', 'bus-i-ness'.
- Read widely and notice spellings in context to build familiarity.
- Test yourself regularly and review mistakes to target practice.
