수업 노트

Oxidation

  • Oxidation is a chemical reaction where a substance gains oxygen.
  • General equation: metal + oxygen → metal oxide.
  • Reactants are on the left, products on the right of the arrow.
  • Examples: iron + oxygen → iron oxide; copper + oxygen → copper oxide.

Combustion

  • Combustion is the scientific term for burning a fuel.
  • Fuels are often hydrocarbons – compounds of hydrogen and carbon.
  • Three requirements: oxygen, heat, and fuel – shown in the fire triangle.

Complete Combustion

  • Occurs when there is plenty of oxygen.
  • General equation: fuel + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water.
  • Example: propane + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water.
  • Products are carbon dioxide and water (both harmless in normal amounts).

Incomplete Combustion

  • Occurs when there is not enough oxygen.
  • General equation: fuel + oxygen → carbon monoxide + water.
  • Produces carbon monoxide, a poisonous, colourless, odourless gas.
  • Dangerous because it is hard to detect; carbon monoxide detectors are used for safety.

Particle arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases – relevant to the reactants and products in combustion (oxygen as gas, fuel as liquid or gas).
