Lesson notes

Shops and shopping

  • Das Geschäft means shop in ich kaufe im Geschäft ein, but can mean business or transaction elsewhere. Einkaufszentrum is shopping centre, Markt market, Buchhandlung bookshop, Metzgerei butcher’s and Supermarkt supermarket.
  • Einkaufen gehen means go shopping and Schaufenster ansehen look at shop windows. Im Angebot may indicate a special offer or available product range; the original price example dreißig statt vierzig Euro explicitly establishes a reduction.

Clothes

  • Pullover jumper, Jeans jeans, Kleid dress, Rock skirt, Hemd shirt, T-Shirt T-shirt, Schuhe shoes, Turnschuhe trainers and Mantel coat name clothing in this context. Größe means size in the supplied jacket request.
  • Ich möchte das Kleid anprobieren expresses a wish to try it on; ich probiere die Jacke an separates an- with a finite main-clause verb. Es passt mir gut means it fits me well, with mir referring to the wearer. Trying on does not imply buying.

Prices and money

  • Was kostet das? asks a price; das ist zu teuer says it is too expensive. Billig means cheap/inexpensive in the price context, teuer expensive and Rabatt discount. A label alone does not establish quality or value.
  • Ich zahle bar cash, mit Karte by card and per Überweisung by bank transfer name payment arrangements. Online is a channel that can be combined with an instrument. In the fictional book example, twelve euros paid with twenty gives eight euros Wechselgeld; no actual payment is requested.

Adjective endings (basic)

  • Nominative masculine: das ist der rote Pullover/ein roter Pullover. Accusative masculine: ich kaufe den roten Pullover/einen roten Pullover. Nominative/accusative feminine examples include die rote Hose/eine rote Hose.
  • Attributive endings depend on case, gender, number and article pattern. A neuter model is das rote Kleid/ein rotes Kleid. Predicative der Pullover ist rot leaves rot without the same attributive ending; do not generalise one nominative example to every sentence.

Comparing

  • Standard written unequal comparison uses billiger als and teurer als; equality can use genauso teuer wie. Teuer forms comparative teurer rather than copying its full spelling unchanged before -er.
  • Dieser Pullover ist am billigsten uses a predicative superlative. Der billigste Pullover is an attributive phrase with a different construction. Regional/colloquial comparative wie occurs, but the exercise specifically requests standard written als.

Services

  • Die Post names postal services, die Bank bank, eine Briefmarke postage stamp, Geld abheben withdraw money and das Fundbüro lost property. The vocabulary does not supply a real postal rate or request account access.
  • Original report: ich habe meine Tasche verloren. Sie ist schwarz und hat einen roten Reißverschluss. Read black as the bag colour and red as the zip colour; no unseen contents, brand or owner’s address is supplied.

Polite requests

  • Ich möchte dieses Kleid anprobieren is a complete request. Könnten Sie mir helfen, bitte? uses Konjunktiv II for a tentative formal request; politeness also depends on tone and context. Haben Sie diese Jacke in Größe M? asks about the stated size.
  • The original two-speaker exchange includes a greeting, request, changing-room reply, price question and forty-euro response. Danke, ich überlege es mir noch is a coherent ending; the customer need not buy the item for the dialogue to succeed.

  • Heute gebe ich fünf Euro für ein Buch aus identifies the stated spending. Use the speaker’s actual words for the motive rather than a universal financial judgement; the exercise neither assumes a learner receives an allowance nor requests real financial details.
