Lesson notes

Circuit Diagrams

  • Circuit diagrams use **symbols** to represent electrical components.
  • Draw connecting wires with a **ruler** in pencil.
  • Wires are drawn as **straight lines**.
  • A **series circuit** has only one path for current.
  • A **parallel circuit** has more than one path for current.

Component Symbols

  • **Connecting wire**: a straight line joining components.
  • **Cell**: provides **potential difference** (voltage).
  • **Battery**: made of **more than one cell**.
  • **Lamp**: produces **light**.
  • **Resistor**: **limits current** and varies potential difference.
  • **Open switch**: circuit **incomplete**; current cannot flow.
  • **Closed switch**: circuit **complete**; current can flow.

Measuring Instruments

  • **Ammeter**: measures **current**; connected in **series**.
  • **Voltmeter**: measures **potential difference**; connected in **parallel** across a component.

Series vs Parallel

  • In a **series circuit**, components are connected end-to-end in a single loop.
  • In a **parallel circuit**, components are connected across separate branches.
  • Current is the same at all points in a series circuit.
  • In a parallel circuit, current splits between branches.

Key Facts

  • Current cannot flow through an **incomplete** circuit (open switch).
  • A **cell** is a single unit; a **battery** is two or more cells.
  • Ammeters must be placed **in series** with the component.
  • Voltmeters must be placed **in parallel** across the component.
